More about ICAO

The International Co-operative Agricultural Organisation (ICAO) is the democratic organisation representing agricultural co-operatives and farmers world-wide.

The ICAO, founded in 1951, is a sectoral organisation of the ICA. This organisation represents 27 agricultural co-operatives organisations from over 24 countries. Agricultural co-operatives account for 36% of the total number of co-operative societies represented by ICA member organisations. These figures clearly indicate the significance of this sectoral organisation, which aims:

  • To exchange experience on specific activity fields by hosting international meetings such as seminars and workshops.
  • To promote the establishment of agricultural co-operatives in developing countries in order to increase food security;
  • To improve the distribution of agricultural products;
  • To take concrete action for preserving the environment.

To achieve these goals, the ICAO works closely with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), World Trade Organization of the United Nations (WTO), the General Committee for Agricultural Co-operation in the EU (COGECA), the International Federation of Agricultural Producers (IFAP), European Confederation and other professional groups in the agricultural sector.
